What Are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels exfoliate the skin’s surface to smooth skin texture, improve its radiance, and restore skin health. They are most effective at enhancing cell turnover and improving the appearance on the surface of the skin. Chemical peels come in many strengths and formulations ranging from superficial to deep peels. Some common acids in chemical peels are alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), and trichloroacetic acid (TCA).

What Happens During a Chemical Peel Treatment?

Your experience during a chemical peel depends on its strength. Even a superficial peel may produce a tingling sensation, but mild discomfort typically subsides quickly. You may notice redness similar to a sunburn for a few days after a superficial peel. Medium-depth peels cause redness, flakiness, and/or visible skin peeling for 7 to 14 days.
