How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Pigment in hair follicles absorbs the light energy delivered by the laser. The energy heats the follicles and destroys them. Our medical spa uses a state-of-the-art, FDA-approved diode laser called the LightSheer® Quattro™, which reduces treatment time, minimizes discomfort, and is safe for patients with darker skin tones. The LightSheer device delivers precise laser pulses that target the hair follicle while leaving the skin unharmed. Diode laser technology is considered the most effective for hair removal, enabling safe and effective treatment of all skin and hair types.

The LightSheer laser is the only hair removal device equipped with “vacuum-assist” technology that gently lifts the skin closer to the laser light. This results in faster, more comfortable treatments for large areas like the back and legs. A “chill tip” handpiece cools smaller treatment areas, such as the upper lip and chin, before, during, and after each laser pulse.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

At any given time, only some of the hair follicles are in the active phase of the growth cycle, requiring multiple appointments to target hairs in the active growth phase effectively. We recommend scheduling 4 to 6 sessions to produce the desired results. The first treatment typically removes about 20 to 30% of hair in the targeted area. After the final treatment, that percentage is typically about 80% hair reduction. The hair is typically finer, lighter, and less dense if new growth occurs.

What Areas Does the Laser Treat?

Laser hair removal can target virtually any area where you have unwanted hair. The most common treatment areas are:

  • Legs
  • Arms
  • Back
  • Bikini area
  • Upper lip
  • Underarms
  • Sideburns
  • Chest

We customize treatments using different laser heads when treating large or small areas. You may opt for skin treatments such as a chemical peel or microneedling to improve the skin’s texture once laser hair removal treatments are complete.

What Happens During a Laser Hair Removal Treatment?

Before beginning the procedure, your treatment provider shaves the target area so the hair is millimeters above the skin’s surface. We apply ice to help you remain comfortable during the treatment. After adjusting the laser based on the color of your hair and skin, the provider moves the handheld laser device over the treatment area as pulses of light target the hair follicles. You may experience warmth or snapping sensation during the treatment. The vacuum-assist technology and the LightSheer device’s cooling mechanism help alleviate discomfort.

Are the Results Permanent?

Laser hair removal permanently reduces hair growth. It doesn’t permanently remove all hair, but any remaining hair is finer and less noticeable.  Most patients return about once a year for touch-up treatments.

Laser Hair Removal FAQ

What happens if I stop laser hair removal before completing my suggested round of sessions?

Hair grows in cycles, and not all of the follicles are in the active growth phase at the same time. You will not achieve full results if you stop laser hair removal before completing the recommended number of sessions. Therefore, it’s important to stick with your provider-recommended treatment plan and schedule.

Do you shave before laser hair removal?

Before your laser hair removal treatment gets underway, our team helps you shave the area being treated. We recommend you avoid waxing or plucking, as the hair follicle needs to be intact for the laser to target it effectively.

How many years does laser hair removal last?

Laser hair removal is a long-lasting solution with results that can last for many years. However, maintenance sessions may be needed to keep your targeted areas of skin hair-free.

Do home lasers work?

While you may be tempted to try the DIY laser hair removal method, home lasers do not work as well as professional lasers. While results may vary, professional treatments typically offer safer, more consistent, and complete results.
